Printing and Production Process of Packaging Paper Boxes

Packaging paper box printing refers to printing decorative patterns, patterns or text on the packaging to make the product more attractive or more descriptive. The packaging box printing production process is very strict, here is the packaging box printing production process.

1. Plate making. The present gift box pays attention to the beautiful appearance, so the plate colors produced are also varied, usually a style of gift box not only has 4 basic colors but also a few spot colors, such as gold, silver, these are all spot colors.

2. Choose the paper. The general gift box wrapping paper is made of double copper and dumb copper paper. The weight is generally 128g, 105g, 157g. Very few gift box wrapping paper will have more than 200g, because the wrapping paper is too thick to mount. The gift box is easy to foam, and the appearance looks very dull. Laminating paper is to choose the appropriate double-gray paper according to customer needs, commonly known as gray board paper or gray cardboard.

3. Surface treatment.The wrapping paper of the gift box usually needs surface treatment. The common ones are cover-varnish, cover-matt, spot-uv,cover-glossy.

4. Die-cutting, cutting is a more important part of the printing process. To be accurate, the die must be accurate. If the cutting is inaccurate, the cutting is biased, and the cutting is constant, these will affect the subsequent processing.

5.Mounting. The usual prints are mounted first and then cutting, but the gift box is first beer and then mounted. One is afraid of getting flowers and wrapping paper, and the other is that the gift box pays attention to the overall beauty. The gift box mounting paper must be handmade to achieve a certain beauty.

6.The last is to punch the holes that should be punched, and wipe the glue on the surface if you don’t, and then you can package them for delivery. FOR MORE…

List of Ten Basic Printing Post Process

For people in the printing industry, the term post-printing is familiar. It refers to the post-printing work. Generally, it refers to the post-processing of printed matter including glue (laminating), UV, varnishing, die-cutting, gold stamping, and punching. Embossing, mounting, binding, cutting, etc., are mostly used for publicity and packaging printed matter. The ten basic post-printing processes are listed below, in no particular order, for your preliminary understanding and understanding.

Printing process NO.1, gold stamping

The scientific name is hot press transfer printing, or hot transfer printing for short, commonly known as bronzing and silver bronzing. In contrast, there is also a cold pad printing.

Printing process NO.2, UV

It is ultraviolet glazing, and UV is abbreviation, which means that the ink can be dried and cured by ultraviolet radiation. UV is usually a silk screen printing process, and now there is also offset printing UV.

Printing process NO.3, bumping and embossing

The scientific name is imprinting. It is a process of forming patterns by local changes in the substrate by pressure. After the metal plate is corroded, it becomes a pressing plate and a base plate for pressing. Divided into two kinds of cheap ordinary corrosion edition and expensive laser engraving edition.

Printing process NO.4, die-cutting

It means die cutting. The die-cutting process is a forming process in which a special die-cutting knife is made according to the design requirements of the printed matter, and then the printed matter or other substrates are rolled into the required shape or cut under the action of pressure.

Printing process No.5, Jin Cong

It is to pass a layer of glue on the paper, and then sprinkle gold powder on the glue.

Printing process NO.6, YO

It is an object like a spring, mostly plastic, which is generally used on the spine of wall calendars and notebooks, and used for page turning.

Printing process NO.7, lamination

Lay a layer of transparent plastic film on the printed paper, including crystal lamination, glossy lamination and matte lamination.

Printing process NO.8, pinhole

Also called needle thread and dental floss, it is to press a semi-connected line into the paper, which usually appears at the opening of the package.

Printing process NO.9, punching

It is to make a hole for a piece of paper or N pieces of paper according to the required size, and there is a special punching machine.

Printing process NO.10, flocking

It is to apply a layer of glue to the paper, and then paste a layer of material similar to fluff to make the paper look and feel a little fluffy.

The Principle and Process of Embossing

What is the embossing printing process? The embossing process is also called bump, embossing, embossing and so on.

The embossing process is the same as the bronzing process, and it is also a very common process in the post-printing process, which can emphasize the performance of the local design. We should also see a lot, paper bags, hang tags, paper boxes and so on.

1. Preparation of embossing process

1.1. Relief: Engrave the graphic and text of the design draft onto the metal plate, and the graphic content of a positive plate is protruding, and the graphic content of the negative plate is concave; (the relief is generally copper or zinc plate, and the intaglio is generally metal. Version or resin version)

1.2. Material: The material that needs to be punched out, generally paper or other materials.

2. Embossing process and stamping

Let’s talk about the production process of the embossing process in detail:

Figure 1. Engrave the graphic content of the design draft onto two copper plates respectively, with one projecting and one recessing to form a set of relief plates. Accurately fix the concave and convex plates on the upper and lower parts of the machine; the paper rotates in the middle of the relief plate;

Figure 1

 Figure 2. Confirm the position of the paper, use the heavy pressure of the machine to press the two copper plates together;

Figure 2

 Figure 3, when the concave and convex copper plates are fully attached, the paper (red part) in the middle is pressed by the machine, forming a convex and concave effect on the other.

3. Summary

1. If it is colorless, the stamp is the same as the stamp, but the content of the stamp can be customized by the moderator.

2. Different papers have different fiber lengths, and there are some differences in the depth of punching;

3. The embossing process can be colorless embossing (plain embossing), embossing after bronzing (three-dimensional embossing), or graphic embossing after printing, etc. FOR MORE…

What is a bleeding? Why add bleeding before printing, layout and design?

1.What is the bleed

Before designing, we have to consider the cutting error of about 1-3mm when the paper boxes, paper bags, hang tags.etc are cut.

After knowing this premise, you should take measures before designing to prevent cutting off important content or leaving white edges due to excessive cutting errors.

Therefore, a reserved part of about 1-3mm (usually 3mm) will be added around the design product, which is what we usually call the bleed.

As shown in the figure below: inside the dotted line is the actual design finished size, outside the dotted line is the reserved bleed.

Figure 1

2.Why add bleed

So, why add bleed before printing design?

We use a simple schematic diagram of the cutting principle to let you understand the importance of the bleed at a glance!

1).Process of normal plus bleed

Through Figure 1 above, we reserve a 3mm bleed on each side, and start cutting below:

Figure 2

 Through Figure 2, we can see the cutting on each side: the printed matter is cut along the cutting line, and the bleeding part around is discarded after the cutting is completed. (The wasted part that is thrown away will also bleed)

Figure 3

 Figure 3 shows the actual finished product effect after cutting. Because 3mm bleeding is reserved on each side, even if there is an error during cutting, it will not affect the appearance of the finished product.

2). What will happen if there is no bleeding?

Above we have added the bleeding properly, and we must keep it under control.

So, what will happen if the bleeding is not added?

The experiment started:

Figure 4 is a design draft with no bleeding reserved around it, so it needs to be cut according to the edge of the printed product. We know that when printing, multiple single sheets are printed on a large printing paper at the same time (generally, the printing format is A1, A2, etc.)

As shown in Figure 4, for the first cut, cut the upper edge first. Because of the cutting error, some will be cut into the finished product. But neither cut to the important content, nor leave the white border, it is still very good.

Figure 4

 Figure 5, the second knife, cut the left side. Because of the cutting error, the cutting position is to the left, and the white edge on the large printed paper will be left on the printed product.

Figure 5

 From Figure 6, we know that the finished product is very poor after there are white edges. Basically it is a defective product, which may cause a lot of waste. (If it is solved by trimming the white edges, it will inevitably cause dimensional errors in the printed product.)

Figure 6

3.to sum up:

In summary, the bleeding is a problem that must be paid attention to before designing.

Before designing, it is a good habit to set the bleeding on the software, and it can also save money for the BOSS.

The Difference Between Pantone Spot Color and Pantone Ink Printing, Pantone C/U Chromatogram Coated/Uncoated

When we print paper boxes, paper bags, tissue paper,etc., if the design standard color requirements are relatively high, the designer will mark a Pantone color value and print in the standard Pantone color. So, what is Pantone color?

American Pantone company is a famous ink brand in the United States, which has formulated the world’s leading color standard: Pantone color matching system. Pantone color matching system has become the color standard in many fields such as printing, packaging, painting, computer, clothing, home furnishing, decoration, industry and so on.

Different colors will be different due to differences in lighting, materials, and machines, and Pantone Chromatography has become the color standard for all parties to contact because of the global use. For example, the designer, the customer and the manufacturer, as long as the designation of a color value, can reduce the cost of color communication as much as possible.

1. Pantone chromatography:

As a designer, if you need to use Pantone color when designing and printing, the most important thing is to have a Pantone color spectrum.

There will be a Pantone color library on the design software, but we know that different non-professional monitors display different colors, so to know the true color of your determined color value after printing, you need to check the corresponding Pantone color spectrum.

Pantone chromatography

2. The difference between Pantone C/U color card

For printing design, there are two commonly used chromatograms, C and U (Coated and Uncoated).

When we look at the Pantone color value, we will see that there will be a C or U at the end, as shown in the picture above, the color will be Pantone 2447 U, Pantone 3554 U and so on.

What we use daily are C and U. C stands for coated paper with a glossy and smooth surface, and the color spectrum is printed on glossy 148 grams of coated paper; U stands for uncoated paper with a matte and non-smooth surface. Uncoated, the color spectrum is printed on 118 grams of offset paper.

Pantone C color chart

Pantone U color chart

3. Summary:
1). Different materials of paper, such as commonly used coated coated paper and non-coated offset paper, have different colors for the same ink printed products, please check different Pantone C/U color cards;

2). Pantone spot color inks are more expensive than conventional inks. When designing and using Pantone spot colors, it is necessary to consider the increase of printed products. To get more information…

There are tens of thousands of colors in the design, how are they reflected in the four CMYK inks?

Let us talk about another concept: outlets. Through the outlets, we can understand the principle of color and gradient printing.

1.outlets

In printing, different shades of the same color are expressed by using inks of different thickness and density.

As shown in Figure 1, it is the normal effect we see, from 0% gray to 100% black. If you enlarge the printed matter enough, you can actually see the following effect: some dots of different thickness and density are covered on the paper.

Figure 1, Gray and black and white gradient outlets

 But the outlets are small enough, such as the commonly used 157 lines (number of rows/inch) and 200 lines (number of rows/inch), you can see the above effect.

2.Screen hanging

Please refer to Figure 2 and Figure 3. Let us take a magenta M as an example. Through different density of dots, it shows 100%, 80%, 50%, and 20% effects.

Figure 2, magenta of 100%,80% outlets

Figure 3, magenta of 50%, 20% outlets

3.CMYK gradient outlets

Same as the black gradient in Figure 1, the figure below is a schematic diagram of the four-color outlets gradient of CMYK.

Figure 4, C cyan gradient Outlets

Figure 7, K black gradient outlets

4.Two-color superimposed outlets

We combine CMYK four colors in pairs, one color is 100%, and the other color is from 0% to 100%.

As shown in Figure 8, M+C=blue; through different outlets of C (M=100%, C=0-100%), more different blues can be obtained;

Figure 8

 As shown in Figure 9, M+Y=red; through different outlets of Y (M=100%, Y=0-100%), more different reds can be obtained;

5.Four-color Outlets and software settings

Through the different outlets of CMYK four-color ink, from 0%-100%, theoretically any color can be obtained.

Figure 17, 18, when we set the color on the software panel, the percentages of the four colors of CMYK correspond to the dots of each color.

Figure 17, Four-color, three-color mixing

Figure 18, four-color, two-color mixing

6.to sum up

1. When printing, it is used to cover the different thickness and density of ink to express the different shades of the same color (refer to Figure 1);

2. Through the outlets, we only use a black ink, and can also print the effects of different shades of black, white, and gray that the naked eye can see. 100% is pure black, 0% is colorless, the middle is gray, and the other C blue, The three colors of M magenta and Y yellow are the same (refer to Figure 4-7);

3. Through the different outlets of CMYK four-color ink (from 0%-100%), theoretically any color can be obtained (refer to Figure 17-18);

4. When we set the color on the software panel, the percentages of the four colors of CMYK correspond to the outlets of the respective inks.

PS:The effect of the above outlets is a schematic diagram. The actual four-color superimposed outlets have different shapes and angles. These are automatically processed by the software, and the designer does not need to care too much. To understand more……

How Does the Printing Machine work?–CTP publishing and four-color printing machine workflow.

1. CTP and film

Designers should have the most contact with printing. Small office printers can directly output data from the computer to the printer, and the printer can directly print graphics and text on paper.

But traditional printing is different. It belongs to plate printing. As the name suggests, it needs to make a computer design draft before printing,such as paper box, paper bag, tissue paper.etc.

The film that you may have heard of before is to print a computer manuscript on a transparent plastic film and then print it out. But now basically the computer manuscript is output directly to the CTP plate (we can imagine the CTP printing plate as a large and thin metal plate), waiting for printing on the machine.

2. Ink and water are not compatible

Traditional offset printing uses the principle of incompatibility between ink and water. To put it simply, the graphic content is separated from the blank part on the CTP plate through a special coating, so that the graphic part is ink-friendly, and the blank part has only water and no ink.

In this way, the CTP printing plate achieves that only the graphic part has ink.

3. Principle of Offset Printing

We use a sketch to get a rough idea of the printing process.

Figure 1. In a set of printing process, there are three cylinders in contact with each other: printing plate cylinder, blanket cylinder, impression cylinder.

Plate cylinder: Install the CTP plate on this cylinder, and then evenly apply ink and water. According to the above-mentioned principle of incompatible ink and water, only the graphic part has ink;

Rubber Cylinder: If the ink on the metal printing plate is directly transferred to the paper, long-term friction and the metal plate will be too hard, and the printing plate will wear out. At this time, we first transfer the graphics and text on the printing plate to a certain elastic blanket;

Impression cylinder: It is matched with the blanket cylinder. According to different paper thickness and paper texture, the gap between the blanket cylinder and the paper is appropriately adjusted. The paper is output from the middle of the two, so that the ink on the rubber is transferred to the paper more evenly.

Figure 1

4. Color printing process

Through Figure 1 above, we know how the ink is transferred to the paper through the printing plate. Let’s take a look at a four-color printing machine, the complete color printing process.

As shown in Figure 2, a general four-color machine will have four units. We have marked K, M, C, and Y respectively, and one color ink will be poured into the top of each unit;

Figure 2

 Through Figure 1 we briefly explained the principle of printing, then the four-color machine has four units with the same configuration, printing one of CMYK colors separately;

The blank paper starts from the right, enters the four-color unit in turn, and comes out from the left to complete the printing of four colors (CMYK).

The paper passes through four units and prints in four colors in sequence, superimposed on each other in the same position, and the color printing process is completed.

5. Summary

1). We know that color printing is a variety of colors formed by using CMYK four-color inks through hanging screens and colors;

2).The CTP printing plate is to divide the design draft into 4 printing plates of CMYK four colors, and express the shade of each color through the size of the dots and omissions;

3). The printing plate is installed on the four units of the printing press, and the graphic content on the printing plate is printed on the paper through ink, and the four-color ink is superimposed to form a colorful effect;

4). If there are other spot colors to be printed (such as special gold, special silver, etc.), you can choose a five-color machine, that is, an additional unit is used to print this spot color.

Quickly Understand the CMYK Printing Colors and The Three Primary Colors.Why should K black be added to the CMY three primary colors?

CMYK Printing

Let’s talk about this topic today: CMYK printing colors for printing. It is often used in paper box, paper bag, label stickers( tissue paper is often printed by the pantone NO.).After we understand the principle of printing, we will know how to express when we communicate with the printing factory.

1. The three primary colors of light

Before understanding, let’s take a look at the three primary colors of light, red, green, and blue, as shown in Figure 1.

Figure 1

2. Three primary colors of printing

When painting, we know the three primary colors of the paint: cyan, magenta, and yellow, as shown in Figure 2.

Figure 2

 In printing, the three primary colors of pigments are practical: C cyan, M magenta, and Y yellow.Let’s superimpose the three colors of ink two by two respectively to see the result:Mix C cyan and M magenta to get blue; mix C cyan and Y yellow to get green; mix M magenta and Y yellow to get red; mix C cyan + M magenta + Y yellow, you can Get black.

Through the superposition of the three primary colors, black can be obtained, then:

3. Since it is the three primary colors of CMY, why is there K black?

We respectively superimpose the three colors of ink together, and the overlapping part will get a black.Of course, the black that the three colors are superimposed is not very black. In addition, such black will have the following problems:

1). Due to the level of ink manufacturing, it is impossible to achieve the effect of pure black after CMY three colors are superimposed;

2) After the three-color inks are superimposed, the most commonly used black can be obtained, which is too wasteful of ink;

3). Three colors are superimposed and printed separately, there will be overprinting errors in the printing opportunity, which will affect the appearance;

4) After the multi-color ink is superimposed, the ink is too thick on the paper, not easy to dry, and easy to stick to the printed matter;

5). The black is not pure, and the contrast effect of light and dark in the printing of landscapes, people and other images is poor;

Therefore, we will use a single black ink when printing, specifically for printing black plates, such as black text, etc.; this way, it can be printed at one time without multi-color overprinting, and a purer black can be obtained.

4. Summary

a. Through the three primary colors of printing, we can get more colors;

b. Three-color superposition can form black, but the black is not pure, and there are other problems when printing (refer to Figure 10);

c. So a black ink is added separately to make the black purer and more convenient for printing.

d. Black (Black) abbreviated as B (CMYB?) is easy to be confused with Blue, so use K instead;

Printing by the pantone NO., also called spot color printing. For a designed color, before printing, we first dispense the ink of this color according to the ratio of the ink, and then print it separately on the printing machine, instead of using the four basic colors of CMYK for four superimposed printing.

When will pantone NO. colors be used?

1. Single-color or two-color paper box or paper bag, tissue paper, hang tags: only 1-2 colors, you can use a single-color/two-color printing machine to reduce printing costs.

2. In order to achieve a better effect of large-area color blocks: four-color printing uses dot superimposition. If large-area color blocks are printed with spot colors, the colors can be more standard and the solid effect can be better;

3. The color requirements are very high: such as corporate standard colors, the designer will specify the Pantone spot color value. Four-color ink printing of different batches of printed products will inevitably have deviations, and Pantone color values are universal, and Pantone ink manufacturers are professionally deployed, which can minimize color deviation.

4. Need to use special spot color ink: special gold, special silver, fluorescent ink, etc., all of which cannot be mixed with CMYK four-color ink, so you need to use spot color printing.

Note: NO.2, NO.3, NO.4 point spot color printing needs to increase the number of printing, and the use of Pantone, special gold, special silver, fluorescent and other special inks will increase the printing cost.
